Overview:Rotom-W is a Pokemon that seems to make players automatically good. It's one of the most commonly used Pokemon and for good reason, it's good. Levitate and its typing leave it with only one weakness, Grass, the least common attacking type. With its low weight Grass Knot, the most well distributed Grass moves does little to it.
Sets:ScarfBreakdown (Rotom-W) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Volt Switch
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Hydro Pump
- Trick
Choice Scarf is Rotom-W's most common set, and either the best or the most anti-meta. Its speed makes it perfect for switching in on Dragon Dance users like Dragonite and Gyrados, and its typing in general makes it a hard check to Scizor. While it's a little annoying that a label like anti-meta is assigned to some of the most standard Pokemon, it doesn't make the descriptor any less accurate. Volt Switch is almost always preferable to Thunderbolt because it's otherwise difficult to keep Rotom-W alive. HP[Ice] helps it revenge kill dragons, their tendency to lock into Outrage also helps with that. Hydro Pump is Rotom-W's only real STAB water move and should always be included. Trick gives Rotom-W a way to cripple walls like Chansey who otherwise laugh at it.
Specially DefensiveBreakdown (Rotom-W) @ Leftovers
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SDef / 4 Spd
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Will-O-Wisp
- Pain Split
- Volt Switch
- Hydro Pump
Specially defensive Rotom-W works. With only 1 weakness, above average bulk, and decent support moves, Rotom-W makes a great specially defensive wall. While its EV's make it specially defensive, Will-O-Wisp allows to to wall most physical attackers too, as burn cuts a Pokemon's attack in half. Pain Split keeps Rotom-W alive. Pain Splitting often involves some sort of prediction, it can be used on Pokemon with low health predicting high health Pokemon to come in, or it can be played safe and only used on high health Pokemon. Volt Switch and Hydro Pump are just STAB, they do what would be expected.
SpecsBreakdown (Rotom-W) @ Choice Specs
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Hydro Pump
- Volt Switch
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Trick
Specs Rotom-W is a monster, a Pocket Monster. Hydro Pump hits like a truck and should never be swapped for anything. Volt Switch can be traded for Thunderbolt on this set as the base power can actually make a difference and switching out after already being hit does little to protect Rotom. HP Fire can be viable with Choice Specs, being able to reliably OHKO Scizor, and deal 70% to Ferrothorn, so it can be considered over HP Ice. Tricking an opponent Choice Specs can cripple Physical attackers better than a Choice Scarf.
Rest-TalkBreakdown (Rotom-W) @ Leftovers
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Will-O-Wisp
- Hydro Pump
Rest-Talk Rotom-W is a remnant of 4th gen, when Rotom-W was an Electric/Ghost. Electric/Water trades mainly spin blocking for better defensive typing in general. Rest and Sleep Talk let Rotom-W recover its health and continue to threaten the opponent while sleeping. Will-O-Wisp cuts the opponent's attack in half. The overkill of a fully defensive Pokemon with Will-O-Wisp is necessary here as it should be switching out on any special attackers. Hydro Pump hits almost every Pokemon immune to Will-O-Wisp super effectively, giving it something to threaten everything.

Hax Rotom-W
Breakdown (Rotom-W) @ Leftovers
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Confuse Ray
- Thunder Wave
- Electro Ball
- Dark Pulse
This set is not recommended for most serious teams, however it is a lot of fun to play with. The idea is to first paralyze the opponent, giving them a 75% chance to hit. From there Electro Ball will have 150% if the opponent was slower than Rotom-W to start with, they can be finished off if they're specially mediocre or weak to electric. Otherwise Confuse Ray is there to confuse the opponent, reducing their 75% chance to 37.5%. From there Rotom-W can use Dark Pulse, with the flinch rate lowering the opponent's chance to land a hit to 30%.
Checks and Counters:Rotom-W's biggest counters are
Amoonguss, Thundurus-T, Haxorus, Hyreigon, Serperior, Sawsbuck, Venusaur, and
Cradily, Each of which can live a hit and then kill it, and
Seaking,
Gastrodon and
Lanturn, who wall it's STAB moves and most Hidden Power options. Choiced Rotom-W is checked by alll Ground types, depending on what it locks into and Quagsire in every case but HP Grass. Sleep talk Rotom-W is set up fodder for Pokemon that don't care about or are immune to being burned and are resistant to Water like Ferrothorn, Brelloom, and Lum Berry or Substitute using Dragons. Specially Defensive Rotom-W is countered by hard hitting Grass types, most notably the ones that were already listed as counters. Calm Mind Espeon completely counters Hax Rotom-W.
Teammates:Rotom can work it's way into any team. Ideal teammates are Pokemon that take advantage of a crippled Pokemon either thanks to Trick or Will-O-Wisp. Choiced Rotom can use support from either Leech Seed or a Wish passer. Rotom is a Part of the most common Volt-Turn core around, Rotom-W, Scizor, and Landorus. A good compliment to Rotom-W's Defensive typing is Sap Sipper Sawsbuck, who can also form a good Attacking Core with Rotom-W.
