OverviewSableye has the amazing ability prankster, and it may just be the best user of it. Sableye has a whole stock of priority moves to choose from, as well as no weaknesses. All of this makes Sableye a helpful addition to any team.
Sets:100% PriorityBreakdown (Sableye) (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SDef
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Recover
- Taunt
- Will-O-Wisp
- Toxic
This set is often viewed as unconventional, as it makes use of no attacking moves. However this really doesn't matter because Sableye is horrible at using them. Yes, all of them, even Nightshade (you'll get more stall damage done from Toxic than Nightshade, and Blissey/Chansey also aren't immune to it.) Toxic also wears down special attackers, preventing bulky ones like Latias from completely sweeping your team. Taunt is there to prevent you from becoming setup bait, as well as stopping other pokemon from taunting you. Will-O-Wisp is used to cripple physical attackers. Recover allows you to act as a makeshift wall despite Sableye's mediocre bulk, allowing you to stall out enemies with Toxic or even Will-O-Wisp. Max spdef will allow you to live both hits from the special and physical side, provided the physical attacker has been burned. And yes, this set is shut down by Taunt, but provided you Taunt them first or have good teammates, this set will work extremely well for you. It fills a good deal of support roles, allowing for more alternative moves on the rest of your team.
Mean GirlsBreakdown (Sableye) (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Prankster
EVs: 252 SDef / 252 HP / 4 Def
Calm Nature
- Mean Look
- Toxic
- Will-O-Wisp
- Recover
From the creative mind of our very own Invalid, I present to you a strategic stall set. With this set, you can trap various annoyances to your team, and essentially stall them to death! 252 spdef EV's will allow you to live most special hits fairly well. As for physical attackers, you can burn them with Will-O-Wisp, obviously. After that, use Mean Look to slowly but surely wear them down. This works especially well for walls like Chansey, provided they aren't carrying Heal Bell. You can also use this set to burn stall Scizor as well. A few words of caution, however: When stalling you are still very vulnerable to crits, just like all walls. While I know it may seem tempting to try, you will absolutely NOT be able to stall out Specs Latios. It will ohko with Draco Meteor, and if it's already -2 it's just going to switch anyway. However, you can easily live any hit from Scarf Latios, so if you already know what you're up against, feel free to stall that out. Without Taunt this set risks becoming set up fodder, however this can be avoided if you run Protect or Substitute, which can be ran over any move except for Mean Look. Be warned though, taking any of the other 3 out will still impede your stalling. Other than those things, it's pretty much the same as any other Sableye. Be cautious when facing strong special attackers, watch out for taunt, and try not to get hit with status moves.
TrolleyeBreakdown (Sableye) (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SDef
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Recover
- Substitute
- Will-O-Wisp
- Confuse Ray
This set can be one of the most annoying things your opponents will face. Confusion and Substitute will make it extremely difficult for enemies to hit you. You can even burn them to not only lessen the damage they do to you when they land a hit, but also to ensure they take damage every turn. This will allow Sableye to stall extremely well and serve as an extreme nuisance to your opponents.
TrickeyeBreakdown (Sableye) (F) @ Iron Ball
Trait: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SDef
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Recover
- Trick
- Will-O-Wisp
- Taunt
This set makes use of a priority trick, which can be used to cripple the most extreme threats to your team. However be careful, as tricking yourself a choice item of any kind will be disastrous.
Lagging Tail is another option over Iron Ball. While Iron Ball removes Levitates immunity to ground, Lagging Tail gives you a guaranteed way to outspeed all opponents.
- Spoiler:
Sub-Nightshade
Sableye (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Will-O-Wisp
- Recover
- Substitute
- Night Shade
This set actually can function better than the standard Nightshade set. This will allow you to use your priority sub to deal more damage. The only drawback is the loss of Taunt, but other than that this makes Nightshade more viable.
Nightshade
Breakdown (Sableye) (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SDef
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Recover
- Night Shade
- Will-O-Wisp
- Taunt
While Nightshade is somewhat outclassed by other options, it does have its advantages. If you encounter an enemy Sableye or prankster with Taunt, Nightshade will give you means of defending yourself (albeit somewhat of a poor defense). It is also one of the only ways Sableye can even hit Espeon, provided it's an Espeon without Shadow ball. It also gives you a better chance for victory if Sableye is your last remaining pokemon, because unlike the other mentioned sets you can deal direct damage.
Swagger-Foul Play
Breakdown (Sableye) (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SDef / 252 Def
Serious Nature
- Recover
- Will-O-Wisp
- Swagger
- Foul Play
Sableye is really the only effective user of the Will-O-Wisp Swagger Foul Play combination. This can be a coveted thing because while using Swagger, it can be nerve wracking. The opponent has the opportunity to deal massive damage after (or if) Swagger hits, which can make it unsafe to use. However, WoW neutralizes this threat fairly well. Then Sableye can safely use Foul Play to deal massive damage to physical attackers. An important piece of advice: be sure to WoW FIRST. Do not Swagger before using Will-O-Wisp. If the latter misses when the opponent is at +2, it won't end well, for you, and you can risk handing the opponent a sweep. Be warned, however, as this set comes with a few drawbacks. This Sableye is pretty much unable to deal with special attackers at all. It can kind of try, but it usually won't end well. Also don't think that Foul Play will allow you to size up espeon, because it won't. Without Special Defense EV's it will simply send you off with a Shadow Ball to the face, and the move does pitiful damage to it.
Checks and CountersWith the right set, Sableye has little to worry about. However, there is a narrow spectrum of enemies that all Prankster Sableye fear. At the top of the list is Espeon. It can switch in and bounce your status move or Taunt right back at you, and if it has Shadow ball it will do more damage to you than you're doing to it with Nightshade. Next is guts users. They gladly welcome the attack boost, and most will OHKO Sableye after it. Heatran is another annoyance, often switching in for a flash fire boost from Will-O-Wisp, while being immune to Toxic. Magic Guard Reuniclus is also a threat with Shadow Ball, however Sableye can still be used to stall out its Trick Rooms with Recover or Taunt. Scrafty is also problem for Sableye if it has shed skin, as it can shake off any statuses and hit Sableye with Crunch. Alakazam can be a colossal pain. Its Shadow Ball hits much harder than Reuniclus's , so even Nightshade won't help you against it, as you will most likely die first.
TeammatesBulky pokemon also work well with Sableye. Teams crippled by status are even easier for walls to outstall. Frail offensive pokemon will also appreciate physical attackers being weakened by burns. Keep in mind that Sableye can also free up move slots for your team, allowing you to try different sets for pokemon that normally carry statuses. Pokemon that are effective in dealing with Heatran are good teammates for Sableye, since Heatran hardwalls several of its sets. A few options can be Rotom-W, Landorus if you're careful about HP Ice, Jellicent walls most of Heatran's sets, but Toxic can be a problem. Dugtrio can trap and easily dispose of Heatran, so long as it isn't currently carrying a balloon. As for the Espeon problem, Scizor and Tyranitar can be fairly good options for dealing with it. However, the former will have to watch out for HP Fire, and the latter will have to be cautious about HP Fight. Xatu is a bit trickier, but Stone Edges from Landorus and Terrakion, are generally effective in dealing with it. Although the latter has to watch out for Xatu's Psychic STABs.
