OverviewWith it's dream world ability shadow tag, Chandelure becomes an even more massive force to be reckoned with. It was deemed so powerful that it earned Chandelure an unfortunate banishment to the Uber tier. It's worth noting that all of Chandelure's flash fire sets pretty much work the same way with shadow tag, so yes the two threads will have sets in common. The only functional difference is that your opponent can't escape, so it allows you to kill off a nuisance to the rest of your team much sooner (unless you're setting up of course).
Sets:The +6Breakdown (Chandelure) (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Shadow Tag
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Substitute
- Calm Mind
- Shadow Ball
- Flamethrower
This is the staple set for a shadow tag Chandelure. Your main goal is to trap something defenseless and set up a sub and Calm Minds. With enough Calm Mind boosts there really isn't anything that can stand in your way. However you want to be careful with what you try to set up on. Your best bet is a wall like Chansey or a Ferrothorn. As a rule of thumb, if it can break your substitute don't bother trying to trap it.
Shadow SunBreakdown (Chandelure) (F) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Shadow Tag
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- SolarBeam
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Shadow Ball
- Flamethrower
The only real difference between the flash fire scarf sun team set and this one is that you can trap and eliminate annoyances to your team more quickly. However it is worth noting that the basic substitute shadow tag set can also function well on a sun team.
Shadow ScarfBreakdown (Chandelure) (F) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Flash Fire
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Psychic
- Hidden Power [Fighting]
- Shadow Ball
- Flamethrower
Functionally the same as the set listed above, just made for your average non-weather team. Psychic can deal with pesky fighting types like Terrakion (better than Energy Ball I might add) and Infernape. Hp fight wards off Tyranitar and Heatran. Shadow Ball and Flamethrower are its basic stabs. Fire Blast is also a viable option.
Shadow SpecsBreakdown (Chandelure) (F) @ Choice Specs
Trait: Flash Fire
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Energy Ball
- Hidden Power [Fighting]
- Shadow Ball
- Fire Blast
All of the wall breaking destructive power of the flash fire variant, now with shadow tag! The difference being that pesky walls or other annoyances have no where to run, allowing you to quickly kill them off. It's also one of the only reliable ways to ohko a Ferrothorn in the rain, and it can't even switch out! However, be warned. Energy Ball will NOT OHKO Kyogre, and that is with no investment. Considering that is your greatest threat, you may want to think about a replacement move. However, Energy Ball does still do a somewhat decent amount, so it can be used to finish off a Kyogre that's already taken some damage.
Checks and CountersAs long as you play your cards right (especially concerning the sub set) there really is no counter to your Chandelure. So long as you are careful not to try trapping anything that can actually kill you, you're pretty much in the clear. Few things can interrupt a Calm Mind sweep, but the main one's are focus sashes. If the opponent hits you hard enough to break your sub or you already lost it, your sweep can be ruined by a super effective hit. A status can also potentially ruin your sweep, as paralysis will slow you down and possibly lose you turns, and toxic will wear down your health. As far as Ubers is concerned, Kyogre is Chandelure's worst nightmare. It can set up rain and can even live a specs Energy Ball. Not all Uber teams will have a helpless wall for Chandelure to set up on, so keep that in mind as well.
TeammatesThe teammates for a substitute Chandelure should be slightly different. It's helpful that to ensure an effective set-up sweep, you make things as easy for Chandelure as possible. Having a pokemon that can put things to sleep will give Chandelure a possible free switch. Burning or paralyzing as much of the enemy team as possible is also a good idea. You should also avoid relying solely on any shadow tag Chandelure, as even though it is very powerful it is still frail, and while there are many Ferrothorns in Ubers, there aren't as many opportunities for you to try and set up. You also probably want to have a poison type, like
Amoonguss to absorb toxic spikes, as those can prevent setting up as well. Amoonguss also learns Spore, giving you the added benefit of an accurate sleep move, and it can sponge up water hits from Kyogre as well as deal decent damage to it in return. Perish song users are also a good option to have, as Chandelure can trap victims while beginning to setup. Groudon is a wonderful teammate in Ubers. Chandelure functions at its best under the sun, and Groudon can also compliment it as a physical wall.
