Cofagrigus [Standard] GhostIC_Big
Mummy
---
Overview
Cofagrigus has the honor of holding the highest defense among all ghost types. It's special defense is not too bad either, giving it superb bulk. It can even live a banded outrage from B-Kyurem! (That's 723 max attack!) With the right set, Cofagrigus can function as a spin blocker or an unstoppable wall. Its unique ability mummy can also cripple many ability dependent attackers, like Jirachi, Azumarill, and Scizor.

Sets:
Calm Mind
Breakdown (Cofagrigus) (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Mummy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Relaxed Nature (+Def, -Spd)
- Shadow Ball
- Calm Mind
- Pain Split
- Hidden Power [Fighting]
This set makes use of Calm Mind in conjunction with Cofagrigus's massive defense to turn it into an unstoppable force! Cofagrigus's already decent special defense can ascend to sky high levels, giving it astounding bulk. Shadow Ball functions as your main stab move, and HP Fight gives you unresisted coverage. Keep in mind ChestoRest is another option for this set, as it gives you more reliable recovery.

Trick Room
Breakdown (Cofagrigus) (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Mummy
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SAtk
Quiet Nature (+SAtk, -Spd)
- Shadow Ball
- Trick Room
- Hidden Power [Fighting]
- Nasty Plot
Cofagrigus's low speed, decent spattack, and great bulk all make it an excellent Trick Room user. Nasty Plot will allow Cofagrigus to quickly raise its attack, and deal massive damage with Shadow Ball. Hidden Power fighting provides this set with unresisted coverage, to ensure that everything will be hit hard. Alternatively, Cofagrigus can be used as a more long lasting Trick Room setter if you give it ChestoRest over Hp fight. However, in that case it will be forced to use mono ghost coverage, which is not always the best thing.

The Iron Wall
Breakdown (Cofagrigus) (F) @ Chesto Berry
Trait: Mummy
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SDef
Sassy Nature (+SDef, -Spd)
- Shadow Ball
- Iron Defense
- Rest
- Will-O-Wisp
Cofagrigus was given the extremely overkill-ish move Iron Defense with the coming of BW2. Of course Amnesia would have been more practical for it, but Iron Defense also isn't completely useless for Cofagrigus. Cofagrigus has fairly decent special bulk, and after Iron Defense it can be incredibly hard to take down. Will-O-Wisp will make it pretty much impossible for physical attackers to kill you, however if you're worried about coverage, go with HP Fighting instead. Toxic is another option over Will-O-Wisp, and it can provide a better method of stalling out opponents. Pain Split and Leftovers can be considered over Rest, but Rest provides a more reliable method of recovery as well as a way to rid Cofagrigus of statuses.

Checks and Counters
If there's one thing that can almost always give Cofagrigus a hard time, it's special attackers. Even with the spdef invested set super effective special hits like those from Zoroark, Hydreigon, or Gengar can deal severe damage to Cofagrigus, and often force it to switch out. Without Rest, Cofagrigus is doomed to be pelted with statuses, as they are in some cases the only way its stalling can be ruined. Sets that rely on only Shadow Ball for offense can also run into problems with Blissey or Chansey, however other moves would likely deal little damage either way. Ferrothorn can be an annoyance to Cofagrigus, as it can hit it with Leech Seed and attempt to set up spikes. However a Cofagrigus with HP Fight and Calm Mind can kill Ferrothorn off after enough boosts.

Teammates
Trick Room Cofagrigus functions very well with Conkeldurr, as they can cover each others' weaknesses. A special wall like Jellicent or Blissey/Chansey can compliment a physically defensive Cofagrigus well to form a defensive core, and Jellicent can also serve as a fellow spin blocker. Jutsified users like Lucario or Terrakion can shield Cofagrigus from dark hits with ease for an attacking boost and ward off threats. You should also have a team with hazard protection such as a rapid spinner or a magic bounce user like Xatu or Espeon, as while Cofagrigus is trying to setup the opponent will often take the opportunity to try and flood your team with hazards.
