'Surprising' Rain Team

Hello everyone, I'm sure that most of you know me to some degree, since I'm on the realgam tower server a fair bit. Anyway, this is my rain team, with some surprises thrown in. While this team isn't the worst team ever made, this team isn't the best, and I would appreciate your suggestions.

A quick glance at the team:
My Rain Team (OU Wi-Fi) 186My Rain Team (OU Wi-Fi) 212My Rain Team (OU Wi-Fi) 479-wMy Rain Team (OU Wi-Fi) 178My Rain Team (OU Wi-Fi) 373My Rain Team (OU Wi-Fi) 639

A closer glance at the team (in case you missed something):

My Rain Team (OU Wi-Fi) 186
Politoed w/ Leftovers
Modest nature
Ability: Drizzle
EVs: 252 SpA, 244 HP, 12 Spe
  • Hydro Pump
  • Focus Blast
  • Ice Beam
  • Perish Song

Well, most Rain teams need a Politoed, right? Anyway, after using Scarfed Politoed for a while, I wanted to try out a more bulky version, and I have really liked using this version of Politoed. Its strong enough to take out things with its moves (mainly double stabbed Hydro Pump), and its bulky enough to take some hits. The first three moves need no real explanation, as they are the best moves for Politoed to have. I would prefer to have surf sometimes instead of Hydro Pump, but Politoed really 'needs' Hydro Pump to damage things, since its offenses are mediocre at best. Perish Song has helped me in various situations, like when facing Baton Pass teams of killing teh last Pokemon on an opponent's team.

My Rain Team (OU Wi-Fi) 212
Scizor w/ Choice Scarf
Jolly nature
Ability: Technican
EVs: 252 Atk, 248 Spe, 8 HP
  • U-Turn
  • Bullet Punch
  • Superpower
  • Pursuit

Well, here comes the first 'surprise', Choice Scarf Scizor. Scizor gets a boost from the rain (halving its fire weakness), but its real role is getting surprise kills on opponents, like Starmie, Alakazam, and Latios. Many people leave these Pokemon in against Scizor, expecting to kill Scizor, but then Scizor turns the tables on them. Scizor is also the only Steel Pokemon on my team, so it is the only Pokemon that can really sponge Dragon-typed attacks. Scizor outspeeds Pokemon up to Alakazam's speed level, making it very effective overall, despite the power drop. Even though Scizor is scarfed, many of its moves are still the same as its other sets. U-turn is for scouting and keeping the momentum on my side. Superpower kills various Steel Pokemon, like weakened Heatran. Bullet Punch is here, as Iron Head is only slightly stronger, and priority is still helpful. Pursuit also gets the Technican boost, and it allows scizor to kill threats like Gengar.

My Rain Team (OU Wi-Fi) 479-w
Rotom-W w/ Leftovers
Modest nature
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA, 144 Spe, 112 HP
  • Hydro Pump
  • Volt Switch
  • Hidden Power Ice
  • Will-o-wisp

Rotom-W is here, because it has many good resistences, it works well in Rain, and it allows me to do the whole 'Volt-turn' dance. anyway, I opted for the standard 'bulky attacker' spread, since I didn't need any more choiced Pokemon (I have three on this team currently). Anyway, Hydro Pump is here to deliever powerful hits in Rain, and Volt Switch is here to help me keep the momentum in a match. Hidden Power Ice may seem out of place, but it helps against certain threats, like Lum Berry Dragonite. Will-o-Wisp is obviously here to burn threats, or cripple them for the rest of the match.

My Rain Team (OU Wi-Fi) 178
Xatu w/ Leftovers
Bold nature
Ability: Magic Bounce
EVs: 248 HP, 188 Def, 72 SpD
  • Psychic
  • U-Turn
  • Roost
  • Toxic

I don't have entry hazard setters on this team, so in comes Xatu, which with good prediction, sets the hazards on its own. Xatu also checks some threats for me, like Sableye, Breloom, and others, all because of Magic Bounce. Also, I used Xatu over Espeon because Xatu gets a good scouting move (U-Turn) and a reliable recovery move (Roost), both of which Espeon lacks. In terms of its moves, Psychic is there for a decently powered move, U-turn is there for scouting purposes, Roost is there for Xatu to keep up its health, and Toxic is there to cripple some walls, like Gastrodon. Its EVs are obviously geared toward physical defense, as more Pokemon use physical moves then special moves in OU.

My Rain Team (OU Wi-Fi) 373
Salamence w/ Choice Scarf
Naughty nature
Ability: Moxie
EVs: 252 Atk, 252 Spe, 4 SpA
  • Outrage
  • Earthquake
  • Dragon Claw
  • Hidden Power Water

Well, here is the second 'surprise', Choice Scarfed Salamence. In the later stages of games, Salamence can come in and sweep the opponent's remaining team because of the attack boosts from Moxie. At the very least, it usually punches some holes into the opponent's team before it dies. I opted for a Naughty nature here for the extra power, since nowadays, many base 100 Pokemon aren't using Scarfs. Most of its moves are self-explanatory. Outrage is there to deliever powerful hits, Earthquake gets good coverage with Outrage, and Dragon Claw is good for sweeping many opponents, as it doesn't have Outrage's drawbacks. Hidden Power Water may seem strange, but Fire Blast wasn't getting used much at all, and Hidden Power Water helps against Pokemon like Donphan and Gliscor, while also getting the rain boost. Believe me, if I could use Hydro Pump or Aqua Tail instead of Hidden Power, I would, but the more powerful Water moves are illegal with Moxie.

My Rain Team (OU Wi-Fi) 639
Terrakion w/ Choice Band
Jolly nature
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk, 252 Spe, 4 Def
  • Close Combat
  • Stone Edge
  • X-scizzor
  • Quick Attack

Well, Terrakion is here, mainly to sweep the opponent's team and deliver powerful hits, much like Salamence. With the boost from its Choice Band, not many Pokemon can stand up to Terrakion. Most of its moves need no explanation. Close Combat and Stone Edge are its Stab moves, and X-Scizzor is helpful against Pokemon like Celebi and Reuniclus. Quick Attack is here because priority can be helpful to have, and because Terrakion really has no better moves. Terrakion needs its nature. along with its EVs, to function well.

Here is the importable version, if you wish to use it:
Spoiler:

Well, thats my team. I appreciate your time if you looked at it, and I appreciate any helpful suggestions.

I think you should take out Psychic on Xatu and put in Light Screen or Reflect so then it's easier for a Terrakion Sweep.

True, it would make a Terrakion sweep easier. However, losing Psychic means that Xatu has no offensive capabilities at all, meaning that it can't beat some defenisve Pokemon as easily, or Breloom for that matter. I still appreciate your suggestion, and I may try it sometime.

I will add one later today, when I have PO access. Its easier to copy/paste that rather then typing it all out.

Also I'd take U-Turn out and put Night Shade cause Xatu has weak attack, and Chansey will be immune, but Terrakion solves the problem.

Alright so as a promised, a real rate:

After testing the team on Smogon Wifi OU Ladder(which you witnessed) , I've noticed a big Virizion weakness on your team, if you lose the speed tie with Terrakion, and Scizor is down, you can do nothing but watch everything faint. You can fix this with an addiction of Alakazam to your team, although you don't have to I may recommend Alakazam over Xatu, Xatu is pretty much set up fodder on anything it can't Toxic. When I was laddering, I figured how important Scizor and Terrakion were to this team being your only priority moves.

Rate:

Team: 7.5/10
RMT: 6/10

Hopefully you don't take that as an insult. Good team and keep up the good work.

Ok, thanks SPS, I will try that out. Xatu is nice, but it doesn't provide any real offense. It can also help against Blaziken, if its still allowed on Realgam.

Also, what do you mean by 'only priority moves'? Isn't two priority moves enough?

Lastly, I don't take offense at your RMT / Team rate, I appreciate your honesty though.

Does anyone else have any suggestions?

(side note, I'm not changing Xatu out right away on this RMT, but I may change it out if I'm satisfied with Alakazam)

Because you're running rain, with Xatu, I could suggest replacing Salamence with Dragonite. Generic, yes, but also quite effetive. Xatu should hopefully stop rocks, with rain not giving any residual damage, letting Dragonite keep Multiscale in play. You could go mixed D-Nite with either STAB Hurricane, and/or Thunder, with perhaps DD and a couple of physical moves, such as Outrage and Earthquake. Or just go DD/Outrage(or D-Claw)/EQ/E-Speed. Solid looking team though, good job.

Too lazy to offer a through rate atm, but

Wouldn't Scarfed Latios, or any Latios be better than Salamence considering it gets surf, and thunder? Even Dragonite is better considering the same typing, because once your opponent learns your set, it really isn't as great as these guys

I've been trying out different things with this team. I will change it sometime, but I have to figure out what works and what doesn't.

Anyway, to some of the posts on here:

In terms of Salamence, it is actually quite effective, as if it gets a few Moxie boosts, then it can very easily sweep the opponent's team. True, Latios may have more speed as well as Rain boosted attacks (Thunder / Surf), but I like moxie Salamence, and the fact that it gets stronger with every KO.

In terms of Dragonite, I have tried it out before (Scizor took its place though) with the Rain abuse set. My problem with it was that it was really slow, and that if rocks did get put up, I couldn't get them off the field. I eventually replaced it with Scizor for the dragon resistence.

On SPS' suggestion about Alakazam: I tried it out, but I didn't really like it, since it had no defensive capabilities whatsoever. also, it didn't seem to be as powerful as I would have liked.

Right now, I'm trying two different Pokemon from the Pokemon on here. Specifically, I've been using Gliscor and Gastrodon over Politoed and Xatu. Xatu, while useful at times, doesn't provide much offense. I've found that my team doesn't abuse Rain too much, and that it doesn't really need Politoed to function well. I've also changed Salamence's Hidden Power Water to Fire Blast.

I appreciate all of your suggestions, and I will keep them in mind.

Okay,I'm really lazy to read all of the other suggestions so this is what I'm going to say,

You should change the HP water of that Salamence to HP ice due the fact that it does x4 Damage(more than rain boosted hp water) on the gliscors which is one of the reasons of you got hp water, the other reason you got HP water is Donphans,Donphan can actually OHKO a salamence with Icible Crash,Ice shard if that donphan is used offensively and Stealth rock damage applied.Let's not forget the sturdy ability which is deadly to salamence.Donphan has a rather low sp def so HP ice/HP water wouldn't matter much.It does benefits alot more the gliscor side.

Another thing, Change Xatu's Psychich for Psychoc if you really want to keep that psychic move It'll benefit alot trading off 10 power.

Try Using Specs/Scarf(It'll need some speed investment) politoed Since you basically run his 252 SP attk and 3 moves. The choice band politoed is actually really really effective and takes by surprise the opponent.BUT if you try this you'd have to trade off another Choicer or have 4 o.o

Idk what else to say TBH the team isn't really attractive to me.I can't really point something else though. Hope this had help for something.
