My Sand Team Empty
PostSubject: My Sand Team   My Sand Team EmptyThu Sep 20, 2012 10:43 am

This team is a Sand Team, designed for using Sand to your advantage. Here is the team:

Tyranitar (F) @ Choice Band
Trait: Sand Stream
EVs: 156 HP / 252 Atk / 100 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Stone Edge
- Crunch
- Pursuit
- Superpower

Most people, when they see Tyranitar at the lead spot, expect it to be the bulky, Stealth Rocker set off of Smogon. I have another Pokemon that an set up the Rocks for me, so I opted to make Tyranitar the Choice Band set and just KO the Pokemon outright. This Tyranitar also provides the everlasting Sandy conditions necessary for my team to do well. All of Tyranitar's moves are useful; it just depends on what opponent you are facing. Pursuit may seem like an odd move at first, but Pursuit is used to trap certain opponents, like Latios and Gengar, and KO them.

Stoutland (F) @ Life Orb
Trait: Sand Rush
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Frustration
- Superpower
- Crunch
- Ice Fang

Stoutland is here to take advantage of the Sandy conditions from Tyranitar. Its ability, Sand Rush, doubles its speed in a Sandstorm, which in turn makes it faster than just about anything else, even Scarfed Pokemon. Frustration is Stoutland's strongest move, so it obviously gets a place on this set. Remember to check the happiness of Stoutland when using it though. If it has 0 happiness, then use Frustration, but if it has max (255) happiness, then use Return. Anyway, Superpower is used to enable Stoutland to hit things that resist Frustration, like Tyranitar, Heatran, and Ferrothorn. Crunch is used to hit Ghost-typed Pokemon that resist Frustration, and Ice Fang is used to hit Dragon-typed Pokemon and Gliscors. Now, when using Stoutland, keep in mind that it doesn't have a very high attack stat, so it may not KO some Pokemon sometimes.

Celebi @ Leftovers
Trait: Natural Cure
EVs: 220 HP / 252 SAtk / 36 Spd
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Giga Drain
- Psychic
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Nasty Plot

I needed a Pokemon to resist Water and Fighting-typed moves, and a Pokemon that could handle some Pokemon, like Conkeldurr and Quagsire, that my team just couldn't handle well. Celebi fit that bill nicely, because it has the handy resistences and it has decent power as well. Basically, for this set, you want to use Nasty Plot first if you can, then hit your opponents hard with your boosted moves. Giga Drain is useful for restoring HP, and Psychic is Celebi's strongest move for this set. Hidden Power Fire is used to hit some troublesome Steel-typed Pokemon like Sczor and Ferrothorn who would otherwise not take much damage fro Celebi's other moves. This set can't do anything to Heatran, but nearly every other member of the team can do well against Heatran, so Earth Power isn't needed here.

Landorus-T (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Intimidate
EVs: 196 HP / 96 Atk / 216 Def
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- U-turn
- Stealth Rock

Landorus-T is the Pokemon that I use for setting up Stealth Rocks. besides that role, I use Landorus-T as a physical wall. With Intimidate and the bulky EVs, Landorus-T can survive many physical attacks. Now, even with the EV investment in bulk, Landorus-T still has an attack stat of 385, so its attacks will still hurt. Earthquake and Stone Edge are Landorus-T's main attacking moves, while U-Turn is used to keep the momentum on your side. Basically, if you think that your opponent will switch his or her Pokemon out for another one, you can use U-Turn and switch Landorus-T out for another Pokemon that works well against the opposing Pokemon.

Gyarados (F) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Moxie
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Waterfall
- Outrage
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge

Gyarados is here for two reasons, to give me a Pokemon that resists Water and Fighting moves (and take Ice moves neutrally), and to give me a powerful, Scarfed sweeper that gets progressively stronger. Gyarados' ability, Moxie, increases Gyarados' attack by one level after every Pokemon that it knocks out. If it knocks out two or three Pokemon, then it can be very hard to deal with. Waterfall and Outrage are almost always the moves that will be used, as they are Gyarados' strongest moves anyway. However, Earthquake and Stone Edge are useful at times, especially when you know your opponent's team and what their weaknesses are.

Heatran (F) @ Air Balloon
Trait: Flash Fire
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Fire Blast
- Earth Power
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Substitute

Heatran is included on this team mainly for its ability to resist Dragon-typed attacks. It has the Air Balloon for its item so that it can resist other Ground-typed attacks. Most Dragons, after all, mainly use Dragon and Ground-typed moves, so Heatran is desgned to be able to take at least one of their moves without being KOed. Substitute is included to take advantage of certain Pokemon, and allow Heatran to KO certain threats. In a way, you can use Substitute like you would use Landorus-T's U-Turn; if you think that your opponent will switch out, then you can use Substitute to give yourself an advantage. Fire Blast is Heatran's main Stab move, while Earth Power is needed to KO certain other threats, like opposing Heatran. Hidden Power Ice is included to dispose of the many Dragon-typed Pokemon out there.

Alternate Options:

If you want to, you can switch Tyranitar's and Landorus-T's roles. You can make Tyranitar be the Stealth Rock setter, and you can make Landorus-T more offensive (by adding more speed and attack EVs to it, etc.) If you go that route, you can also opt to change Landorus-T to normal Landorus. Landorus has the ability Sand Force, which increases the power of most of its moves under a sandstorm, thus making it more powerful than Landorus-T under a sandstorm. For Stoutland, you can use a Choice Band set with the moves Frustration, Superpower, Crunch, and Wild Charge, as the Choice Band gives Stoutland more power than the Life Orb does. I opted to use the Life Orb set because I simply don't like having too many choiced Pokemon on my teams. Lastly, Gyarados can be switched out for another Pokemon, like Jelicent which resists Water, Fighting, and Ice moves. Gyarados just isn't too powerful right away, and that can be a disadvantage at times.

Major Threats:

I built this team so that at least one of my Pokemon resists a certain type of move. That being said, nothing resists Rock moves for this Particular team, so something like Terrakion could cause me some problems. Also, after Heatran is weakened or KOed, nothing else resists Dragon-typed moves, so that can be problematic at times. After Celebi is gone, Conkeldurr (with Ice Punch) and Quagsire can be hard to deal with. Now, you can't just rely on team synergy to counter various threats. Just because many of your team members resist particular moves doesn't make the team invincible. In this case, I rely on Stoutland (which has doubled speed under Sandstorm) to take out some troublesome threats, and I have Landorus-T to take physical hits as well.

My Sand Team Empty
PostSubject: Re: My Sand Team   My Sand Team EmptyWed Oct 03, 2012 5:38 pm

Thanks for your advice. However, I'm using a Choice Scarf on Gyarados, which makes it 1.5 times faster than normal, but locks it into one move. Because of that, Dragon Dance doesn't make sense for this Gyarados, as it is useless to keep using Dragon Dance over and over (when you are unable to use other moves) Now, you can switch Gyarados out, switch it back in, and use a different move than before. I'm also using a Jolly nature instead of an Adamant nature because I want my Gyarados to outspeed certain Pokemon (like Alakazam for instance) that it would otherwise not outspeed.
